First/Then boards should be used consistently for best results.
"First" pictures are typically work based tasks (i.e. picture cards, book, matching task, paper/pencil tasks).
"Then" pictures should ALWAYS be something that the child is motivated to work for and enjoys (i.e. favorite snack, bubbles, favorite toy).
Tip: Set a timer for the reward.
Tip: Start with short work based tasks (or fewer trials) and slowly increase the amount of work time/number of trials.
