Generalization Strategies
Short description
Generalization strategies are procedures for generalizing production of clinically established responses in relation to new stimuli, new audiences and in new situations. (Costello, 1983).
Long description
Generalization strategies are moving clinically established targets/responses to new stimuli, new audiences, and new situations. Methods include: Sequential modification: intervention environment is extended from one place to another until spontaneous generalization occurs, adjunctive milieu therapy: therapy occurs in a new place, with new people, and more functional activities, intermittent or delayed reinforcement: use less extrinsic reinforcement and increase the use of natural contingencies, distracter items: use stimuli that are semantically relevant but not direct targets of intervention, and self-monitoring: SLP encourages the patient to become the “teacher” who constantly judges performance (Costello, 1983).
