Strategies and techniques
Camping Activity Ideas/Suggestions:
**Blank Map- following directions (i.e. draw mountains on the top left of the map. Draw two trees in corner of the map.) Cut out a hiker and a tent picture. Make into a game by drawing lines and moving hiker one step closer to the tent/camp. Use as a reinforcer by adding pictures of items to the map. Practice sequencing (what will we come to first/next/last).
**Large backpack- cut out camping items and use as a reinforcer. Add items to the backpack for correct responses/productions. Memory recall game (i.e. I went on a camping trip and I packed X, Y, Z. What did I pack?). Add in non-camping pictures to practice categorization/what do I not need/which one is not for camping.
**Camping items/People/Animals/ Camping Scenes- practice identification, labeling, following directions (i.e. put the flashlight beside the tent, put the backpack in between the trees, show me the tent that is not beside a tree). Day vs. Night. Expanded sentences (show me the bear that….). Negatives (put the girl that does not have a fish on the page). Quantities of paw prints/trees/fish (one/some/all/more/most/less/least/1-10). Modifiers (colors, sizes, superlatives, shapes).
**Large fish and fishing pole- Use as a reinforcer for correct productions/responses. Laminate and use a dry erase marker to add articulation or vocabulary words (i.e. modifiers, pronouns, verbs, multiple meaning words, etc.) to the back of the fish. Make into a game to find the matching words/shapes/colors. Add in smaller fish to target sizes. Following directions (i.e. first catch a small blue fish, then catch a large red fish/catch 2 blue fish and 1 yellow fish/get the blue fish that is in between the yellow fish).
**Expansion into story generation, story retell, personal narratives, answering Wh- questions related to camping, compare and contrast camping vs staying in a hotel, what do you do if questions/scenarios, safety discussions, what clothing to wear in different seasons, forest animals vs. zoo vs. farm animals, nocturnal animals, hibernation/related vocabulary, and other language goals.
**Blank Map- following directions (i.e. draw mountains on the top left of the map. Draw two trees in corner of the map.) Cut out a hiker and a tent picture.
